News from the Field (May 2006)

One of the reasons the GRTR! screening tool is a valuable resource in early childhood settings is because it can be used to inform classroom practice. The Girls Preparatory School (Girls Prep) in New York City found that the tool can also inform home practices as well.

The year before Girls Prep enrolled their first class of kindergarten students, they invited prospective parents of preschool children to come in for "Saturday School. These weekly gatherings were used to help build relationships between the school and the parents of incoming students. One of the pieces of the program was to instruct the parents on how to use the GRTR! screening tool with their child and how to incorporate the GRTR! activity cards into their daily routines. The school found this to be a great way to build a strong home-school connection while strengthening literacy skills before kindergarten.

Girls Prep also collected the results of the screening tool and noted the activity cards that were used the year before in order to pass the information on to the child's kindergarten teacher.
