Ask Get Ready to Read! (Summer 2006)

Q.. I run a small program for four-year-olds in my home. I am trying to learn more, but I have very little background in early childhood. Can I use the Get Ready to Read! screening tool if I don't have formal training in education?

A. Yes! The Get Ready to Read! screening tool was specifically designed to be used by parents and all early education providers. It is easy to use even if you don't have formal training in education.

However, if you are concerned about a child after you have used the screening tool, speak to the child's parent about skill-building activities they can try at home. You can also consult with a professional such as a pediatrician or learning specialist in your local school district for further advice.

For more information on what the results of the screening tool mean, see "FAQ's--After using the Get Ready to Read! screening tool" and "Should I Be Concerned?"
