Get Ready to Read! News Briefs May 2007 Preschool, Childcare, and Early Literacy The American Academy of Pediatrics and Get Ready to Read! Response to Intervention as it Relates to Early Intervening Services: Recommendations This Policy Forum report documents the process participants followed to describe barriers to implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) as an Early Intervening Service (EIS), policy recommendations to address these barriers and implementation considerations. NACCRRA Ranks State Child Care Center Standards and Oversight The National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (NACCRRA) has released "We Can Do Better," a report ranking states on their childcare quality standards and highlighting the need to improve the quality of childcare across the nation. Leadership Matters Pre-K Now has released the 2008 edition of its annual publication, Leadership Matters, intended to commend innovative and tenacious governors and exposing the unsatisfactory work of others. This year, the report indicates that 29 governors proposed an increase in Pre-K funding among its state-by-state highlights. The Child Well-Being Index The 2007 Child Well-Being Index from the Foundation for Child Development finds that despite improvements in child health-safety and well-being, children's health continues to decline. Small improvements in teen pregnancy, violent crime, and drug and alcohol abuse balance this decline and lead to an overall "standstill." UNICEF Gives Poor Rating to U.S. in Child Well-Being This year's UNICEF Report Card, "Child Poverty in Perspective: An Overview of Child Well-Being in Rich Countries," ranked the U.S. very poorly in comparison with other rich nations in ensuring children's health, safety, and emotional well-being. Head Start Standardized Preschool Tests May Be Suspended Congress is moving to end the use of the National Reporting System, a set of standardized tests given to thousands of preschool children through Head Start programs each year since 2003, arguing the exam is developmentally inappropriate and poorly designed. The Future of Children Journal Addresses Teacher Quality The spring edition of The Future of Children focuses on the improvement of teacher quality in an effort to close the achievement gap -- by broadening entry requirements, identifying and promoting effective teachers, increasing pay to teachers who work in challenging schools, and promoting meaningful professional development. Family Child Care in the United States A new paper from Cornell University's Department of Human Development examining home-based childcare providers and the characteristics of families reports among its findings that much of regulated family childcare is of "adequate" quality. NGA Issues Bright Futures The National Governors Association (NGA) has issued a new quarterly newsletter, Bright Futures, highlighting early childhood policy for children ages birth to five. Education Leadership Policy Toolkit The Education Commission of the States has released the Education Leadership Policy Toolkit, providing information on effective education leadership policies and practices for state policymakers and school district leaders. Parents As Teachers Increases Learning Aptitude in Children Parents as Teachers, a Get Ready to Read! partner, has released a study assessing school readiness and achievement of Missouri children, demonstrating how Parents as Teachers can increase a child's learning aptitude regardless of economic status. Conferences: The 2007 National Smart Start Conference The 2007 National Smart Start Conference will be held from May 8-11, in Greensboro, North Carolina, for Smart Start partnership staff, board members, service providers and volunteers; early childhood-related organizations; government representatives; and child-care teachers, owners and administrators. Leadership Connections From May 10-12 in Chicago Illinois, The McCormick Tribune Center for Early Childhood Leadership will host a conference especially designed for early childhood administrators, lead teachers and supervisors, trainers and consultants, and technical assistance specialists. 2007 World Forum on Early Care and Education The World Forum on Early Care and Education will convene from May 15-18 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where early childhood administrators, trainers, caregivers, public officials, and advocates from over 70 countries will exchange ideas about the quality of services for young children in diverse settings. 52nd IRA Annual Convention The 52nd International Reading Association (IRA) Annual Convention: "Literacy Without Borders" will be held in Toronto, Canada from May 13-17. The Symposium on Research in Child Language Disorders Annual Conference From June 7-9 in Madison, Wisconsin, the Symposium on Research in Child Language Disorders (SRCLD) will host their annual conference. Intentionality in Early Childhood Education The National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development will hold their 16th Annual Conference, "Intentionality in Early Childhood Education," from March 10-13 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for leaders who prepare and mentor early childhood professionals.
