This new report from the Center for Law and Social Policy describes the strategies, funding options, and governance structures that some states use to improve early care and education and offers model family support systems for children ages birth to five.
 
Investment in Head Start Boosts Graduation Rates and Cuts Crime (PDF, 8 pages)
Fight Crime: Invest in Kids has released a new brief suggesting that the full-funding of Head Start could increase graduation rates by 10 percent and thereby decrease crime rates.

Making Pre-kindergarten Work for Low-income Working Families (PDF, 24 pages)
This paper from the Center for Law and Social Policy discusses the increasingly frequent call for high-quality early education and the kinds of family-oriented programs that must be implemented in order to assure the successful development of children from low-income families.

The National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) has released a brief focusing on what it takes to ensure success for low-income children in early education.  This brief and the report, Effective Preschool Curricula and Teaching Strategies, are based on an NCCP meeting with distinguished researchers and a careful review of recent research.

Educational Productions has developed a video on the importance of the skills that children learn and practice in high-quality preschool education programs and how much these skills are valued by employers.

Enriching Children, Enriching the Nation
This book discusses the long-term benefits of investment in early childhood development, noting the effects of voluntary, high-quality, publicly funded, targeted prekindergarten and universal prekindergarten on future government finances, the economy, and crime.

Pre-Kindergarten in the South: the Region's Competitive Advantage in Education (PDF, 36 pages)
According to a Southern Education Foundation report, although Southern states have typically lagged behind other regions in education performance, they show greater enrollment, higher standards, and more funding for state-funded pre-K than other regions. 

Back-to-School Statistics
Facts for Features presents highlights on the many statistics associated with back-to-school, noting among the statistics that 54 percent of three and four year olds were enrolled in school and 70 percent of kindergarteners enrolled full-day in October 2005.

WWC Reviews Beginning Reading Programs
The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) has released two new intervention reports on Early Intervention in Reading, a program that provides extra instruction to students at risk of failing to read, and Read, Write & Type, a software program for beginning readers that uses writing as a way to learn to read.

Giving Child and Youth Development Away (PDF, 20 pages)
This social policy report from the Society for Research in Child Development discusses the impact that Head Start has on children and the likeliness for the program to benefit society as a whole in the long-term. 

Reach Out and Read Calls for More Physicians to Give Free Books
Reach Out and Read, a national literacy program, is calling for more physicians to participate in its book distribution effort to low-income families.  The program has already trained more than 46,000 physicians, nurses, and health care professionals. 

New Study on Preschool Intervention to Be Held This Fall
In the fall, a new study will examine preschool intervention and how it affects struggling students who might otherwise end up in special education.  The study, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and led by two national experts on early childhood, will be conducted in Massachusetts and New Mexico.   

PK-3 Education: Programs and Practices that Work in Children's First Decade
This new report synthesizes evidence on the pre-K to third grade (PK-3) practices that have led to school success, indicating that children participating in PK-3 programs perform better than students who did not participate in these programs.

Is More Better? The Effects of Full-Day vs Half-Day Preschool on Early School Achievement (PDF, 22 pages)
A new report from The National Institute for Early Education Research finds that children attending full-day programs do better in math and literacy than children who attended half-day, with achievement gains continuing through the end of first grade.

2007 NAFCC Conference
From August 15 through 18 in Anaheim, California, the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) will hold its annual conference with the theme of "Foundations for the Future."

13th Annual NESA Conference
From October 28 through 30 in San Diego, California, the National Even Start Association will host a conference with the theme of "Make a Difference: Shape the Future."
