Preschool Education for All - One of Most Significant Educational Advances in Ninety Years
A front-page story in The Wall Street Journal cites the move toward universal preschool as one of the most significant expansions in public education since World War I. 

High-Quality Preschool Will Be Difficult for Lower-Middle Income Families to Afford
A new analysis by National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) shows that families with household incomes in the $30,000 to $50,000 range will have a difficult time paying for high-quality preschool as eligibility guidelines for programs in many states are too low for families in this range. 

IRA Supports Increased Literacy for All with New Reading Instruction Institute
The International Reading Association (IRA) has created the Status of Reading Instruction Institute, providing objective and detailed information about effective reading instruction for parents, teachers, and policymakers.

Study Shows Phonics Works with Literacy Instruction, Not Against
A new study from researchers at New York University shows that phonics, holistic word recognition, and whole language approaches work together to determine reading speed, disproving the common theory held by reading specialists that phonics works against the other techniques in reading instruction. 

Briefs on the Effectiveness of High Quality Early Learning Released
The Foundation for Child Development has released two briefs on how high quality early learning is effective--Effects of Preschool and School-Age Intervention on Adult Health and Well Being: Evidence from the Chicago Longitudinal Study and Building a Science of Classrooms.

Minority-Segregated Schools Hinder Reading Progress
According to a press release from the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina, the most influential factor that inhibits a child's growth is attending a school of at least 75 percent minority student population.

Developing Literacy in Second-Language Learners: Report of the National Literacy Panel on Language-Minority Children and Youth
Colorín Colorado has released a new report on the published research on second-language learning, focusing on literacy development, cross-linguistic relationships, socio-cultural contexts, instruction and professional development, and student assessment.

According to Bruce Fuller, leading proponent of income-targeted funding, current research shows that children from poor families get the most help from high-quality preschool, raising the question as to whether the government should focus on poor families or offer free preschool to all children.

New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein suggests starting kids at school as young as age three, especially in high-poverty areas where private preschool is not usually an option.

Hospital Highlights Reading and the Brain at Literacy Training Session
"Reading and the Brain," an episode from WETA's television series "Launching Young Readers," explores how scientists are studying the brain to discover why some children struggle to read.  The Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, a partner of the Reach Out and Read program that collaborates with physicians to promote early literacy, highlighted this episode at its annual literacy training session for pediatric residents.

Building Early Childhood Facilities: What States Can Do to Create Supply and Promote Quality 
A new report from Rutgers University's National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) finds that unless the need for new and better preschool facilities is addressed, states launching and expanding preschool programs run the risk of falling short of their goals.

WWC Reviews Center-Based Early Childhood Interventions
The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) from the U.S. Department of Education has reviewed 17 early childhood interventions, covering oral language, print knowledge, phonological processing, early reading/writing, cognition and math in center-based settings for three to five-year-olds.

The National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) will host its 37th Annual Conference from October 21-23 in Chicago, Illinois, with the theme of "The Journey Continues: Giving Our Children a Chance."

DEC Annual International Conference on Young Children with Special Needs & Their Families
From October 25-28 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) will host its 23rd Annual International Conference, focusing on "crossing new borders" in the field of early childhood. 

13th Annual NESA Conference
The 13th Annual National Even Start Association (NESA) Conference, from October 28-30 in San Diego, California, will focus this year on the theme of "Make a Difference: Shape the Future."

NAEYC Annual Conference & Expo
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) will gather more than 20,000 early childhood professionals for its annual conference and expo from November 7-10 in Chicago, Illinois, to discuss the everyday issues of working with young children and families. 

2007 Annual ASHA Convention
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) will "Honor the Past and Forge the Future" at their 2007 convention in Boston, Massachusetts, from November 15- 17.
