Q. When and why should I have a child's vision and hearing screened?
A. A young child's vision and hearing should be screened by a qualified professional once a year. This is usually done at a child's school or day care center or at the annual well-child visit with a healthcare provider. If you don't think that your child's vision and hearing has been checked, ask your child's teacher, care provider or pediatrician.
Q. What can I do to support a 4-year-old's early literacy development during extended breaks in the school year?
A. Parents should always be encouraged to read aloud to their children. This is particularly important during breaks from school. Reading out loud to children has been proven to help develop vocabulary and language, both of which are crucial for learning how to read. Reading aloud to a child also helps that child to become comfortable with books and how they work. Parents can also print out our free activity cards for engaging ways to develop early literacy skills. |
