Can you spot a literacy-friendly classroom?

Last month, you used the Get Ready to Read! Home Literacy Checklist to make sure your home was literacy friendly during the summer months.  Now that summer is drawing to an end, do you know what to look for in a literacy-friendly classroom? 

Whether you are a parent sending your child off to preschool, or a teacher preparing for those first days of classes, this Classroom Literacy Checklist will help you to recognize or create an environment that encourages and nurtures the skills that children need to learn to read.

The Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Health and Human Services have proposed an initiative that would provide competitive grants to the state agencies that administer early childhood programs. 

Grants would enable states to raise standards, build systems ensuring the quality and effectiveness of early learning programs, and monitor all publicly funded programs' performance against state standards.
